There’s something about summer
that calls for a drink in hand—whether it’s a bright citrus spritz, a frosty herbal soda, or a perfectly styled mocktail garnished with fresh mint. And lately, those drinks are more likely to be non-alcoholic—and for good reason.
As interest in wellness grows and more people question the role of alcohol in their lives, the non-alcoholic beverage scene is booming—especially here in Portland. This city has long been known for its creative food and drink culture, and that same energy is being poured into thoughtful, beautifully crafted non-alcoholic options. From local NA spirits to inventive mocktails on restaurant menus, it’s never been easier—or more exciting—to enjoy a drink without the buzz.
As a plant-based food and non-alcoholic beverage photographer, I’m always drawn to vibrant, expressive storytelling through styling. And this season, I’m all in on capturing the color, texture, and joy of non-alcoholic summer drinks!
But before we dive into the visuals, I want to share something personal.

Why I Stopped Drinking (And Why I’m So Glad I Did)
For a long time, drinking felt like an expectation as an adult—especially in social situations. Out with friends? Have a drink. Celebrating something? Have two. Alcohol was part of my childhood and became part of the background, so normalized I never questioned it.
Then came the pandemic. Everything stopped. Social outings, travel, even casual hangouts were gone. Without realizing it, my drinking habits slowed to no consumption. By the time the world opened back up again, I hadn’t had a drink in nearly two years.
My first night out post-lockdown was a trip to NYC to visit an old friend. We went out for dinner and I had two margaritas. Just two. From getting into the car after dinner to arriving back at her place, I blacked out. I woke up the next morning confused, embarrassed—and stunned to learn I had met her mother and had no memory of it.
That was the last time I drank.
Not everyone can—or should—drop alcohol overnight. For many reasons, it’s not that simple, and I deeply respect that. I always kept that understanding close, in case I ever needed help or community support.
I haven’t had a drink since, and this year I’m celebrating 3 years sober. And I truly love my life this way. I feel more grounded, more present, and more aligned with the creative, intentional life I want to build.

Sobriety isn’t about missing out
Why Non-Alcoholic Beverages Matter
Sobriety isn’t about missing out—it’s about showing up. And that includes the drinks we enjoy when we gather.
In my work as a photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how the beverage space is evolving. Clients are launching beautiful, high-integrity NA spirits. Cafés are experimenting with alcohol-free aperitifs. Restaurants are offering zero-proof pairings. It’s not just a trend—it’s a shift in what we value.
And here’s the thing: these drinks look amazing, too. Summer mocktails sparkle in the light. Herbal spritzes dance with texture. Everything from a single cube of ice to a sprig of lavender can become part of the visual story. This is where food styling meets mindfulness—and where brands can really connect with people.

Behind the Lens: Capturing the Joy of NA Beverages
When I shoot non-alcoholic drinks, I approach them with the same energy and curiosity I bring to any styled session. These sessions are about more than just aesthetics—they’re about making space. For celebration, connection, and creativity without compromise.

Texture tells a story.
Bubbles, condensation, and the soft fog of a chilled glass can create a sense of touch through an image.
Props matter.
Seasonal napkins, natural surfaces, or playful glassware help evoke a mood or moment.
Lighting creates emotion.
Whether it’s a moody backlit shot or a soft summer glow, the right light sets the tone.
